The reconstruction of the south terraces of the town’s original medieval fortifications lasted two years and was completed in the autumn of 2011. The reconstruction work was part of an integrated development plan for the town of Hradec Králové.
The costly reconstruction, which was afforded significant funding by the EU, was preceded by extensive archaeological research. The archaeologists discovered remains of older built-up areas, some from the Baroque era. This original Baroque architecture was an inspiration for the artist Tomáš Rafl, creator of the four fountains which were installed in the newly reconstructed south terraces. Three of the fountains were erected on the site of the Baroque network of stairways, whose outline provided guidance for the artist The fourth fountain, located opposite, was inspired by a Baroque trough uncovered during the archaeological survey. The whole area, landscaped into a terraced leisure park with inviting walkways, was officially opened to the public on 27th October 2011.
